Connecticut has a rich artistic history and has been home to many talented painters. Here are a few artists you might find interesting:

  1. Sol LeWitt (1928-2007): An influential figure in conceptual art, Sol LeWitt was known for his wall drawings and sculptures. He was born in Hartford, Connecticut, and his minimalist and geometric artworks gained international recognition.
  2. Frederic Edwin Church (1826-1900): Church was a prominent figure in the Hudson River School, a group of landscape painters known for their romantic depictions of nature. He was born in Hartford and his notable works include “The Icebergs” and “The Heart of the Andes.”
  3. Robert Rauschenberg (1925-2008): Though not exclusively associated with Connecticut, Rauschenberg had strong ties to the state. He lived and worked in the town of Stony Point, where he created many of his innovative works that blended painting and sculpture.
  4. John Trumbull (1756-1843): An American artist during the Revolutionary War era, Trumbull was born in Lebanon, Connecticut. He is best known for his historical paintings, including “Declaration of Independence” and “Surrender of Lord Cornwallis.”
  5. Ellsworth Kelly (1923-2015): While Kelly was not born in Connecticut, he spent a significant part of his later life in Spencertown, where he created many of his iconic abstract paintings known for their bright colors and simple shapes.
  6. Milton Avery (1885-1965): Born in Altmar, New York, Avery spent much of his career in Connecticut. He was known for his modernist approach to landscape and figurative painting, often using bold colors and simplified forms.
  7. Anna Mary Robertson “Grandma” Moses (1860-1961): While Grandma Moses was not a traditional painter, her folk art style and charming depictions of rural life gained her widespread popularity. She lived in Eagle Bridge, New York, near the Connecticut border.
  8. Ralph Earl (1751-1801): Earl was an early American portrait painter who was born in Shrewsbury, Massachusetts, but spent much of his career in Connecticut. He is known for his portraits of notable figures of the Revolutionary era.
  9. Jasper Francis Cropsey (1823-1900): Cropsey was a landscape painter associated with the Hudson River School. He was born in Staten Island, New York, but his later career was closely tied to Connecticut, where he painted many of his autumnal landscapes.
  10. John Henry Twachtman (1853-1902): Twachtman was an Impressionist painter known for his atmospheric landscapes. He spent time in the art community of Cos Cob, Connecticut, which was known for fostering Impressionist artists.
