CANTON CONNECTICUT
Incorporated in the year 1806, Canton, Connecticut is a part of the Hartford County. The Farmington River flows through the town. Canton consists of various small villages like Colinsville, North Canton, Canton Valley and Canton Center. Each section has its own post office except North Canton where the post office service was stopped due to low demand.
The town is named after a place in China having the same name. The village of Colinsville has featured in the list of the coolest small towns of America published in the ‘Budget Travel’ magazine. The method of die casting has its origin in Canton. A resident of the town, Elisha Root developed this industrial technique at the Collins Axe factory in Collinsville.
The Canton valley area has preserved some of the properties which were built in the 18th century and the homes are still in use. During that time, this area saw a lot of traffic because of the presence of the Albany Turnpike which was the stagecoach route that took passengers from Hartford to Albany. Canton village was a hub of commerce with doctors and lawyers practicing in the area and the trade conducted through various shops run by weavers, shoemakers, harness makers, coopers and tailors. At present, there are shopping malls, banks, retails shops, restaurants, professional offices and other businesses.
The Canton Center was originally the site for many distilleries because of the presence of many apple orchards and cider mills. There were other small industries as well like the grist mills, saw mills, carriage repair, blacksmithing and tannery to name a few. The North Canton area also had a similar industrial scenario.
The village of Colinsville was created by Samuel Collins who set up the famous Collins Company here which manufactured knives, axes and machetes. He donated land, laid out the streets and financed the construction of the store, Church and company offices.
