After incorporation, New Haven became an industrial center with the establishment of a gun factory and development of cotton gin. Clock making and brass manufacturing also kept the residents occupied. The arms industry in New Haven led to the bestowing of the title ‘The Arsenal of America’ on it. This city saw the rise of the Abolitionist movement and experienced the influx of Southern European immigrants after the American Civil War.
Most of the immigrants were of Italian and Jewish origin which is why the influence of both these cultures is still evident. From the 1960s, New Haven saw a decline economically and in terms of population. However, since the year 2000, many renewal projects have been put in place and the area around the Green has seen the development of many residential properties.
